Active School Flag (ASF) is a Department of Education initiative supported by Healthy Ireland, and part of the National Physical Activity Plan.
The ASF initiative provides schools with a framework to guide, support and incentivise them to work towards achieving a physically educated and physically active school community.
Once awarded, ASF remains valid for a period of 3 years, after which time schools are invited to re-engage with the process.
We received our first Active Flag in May 2018. As part of this program, the children enjoyed yoga, rugby, hurling, football, running around Europe, Dancing December, target practice, Bizzy Breaks and playground games at lunchtime.
We received our 2nd Active Flag in May 2021. As part of this programme, we set up a new active walkway track in the school grounds we also developed the dance strand of our physical education programme with dance classes for all classes by School Fitness Ireland instructors providing classes.
We received our 3rd Active Flag in May 2024, well done to our Active Flag committee and co-ordinator for making our school active and earning the 3rd flag,The aim of the Active Schools Flag is to encourage schools to be more active, more often. It links in with all of the work we are doing throughout the year - being active, getting exercise, and taking care of our minds and bodies All students have been involved in several active initiatives this year such as Dare to Believe Olympic movement breaks, active break every day, stations on the yard… most notably the school completed the Fyffe’s Fit School Squad coming 5th in the country!!!
